My portrait practice seeks to capture the essence and likeness of the sitter. I often reveal an aspect of the person that may be in quiet conflict with the rest of their being - something unresolved, waiting to be integrated.
Working from life allows this to emerge over time. The painting becomes an object for contemplation. It isn’t created simply to be liked, but to function as an alternative mirror - inviting the sitter to reflect, and perhaps to feel differently about themselves through sustained engagement with the painting.
Other portrait commissions are simply celebratory and less psychologically demanding showing people engaged in a special moment.
